About the Tennessee Classical Association
TCA promotes the study of ancient Greek and Roman language and civilization in Tennessee schools.
TCA encourages and facilitates communication and collaboration among Tennessee teachers of classical language and civilization . . . from the elementary level through the post-secondary level.
TCA is affiliated with the Tennessee World Language Teaching Association, with a TCA meeting traditionally coinciding with the TWLTA Annual Conference each November.

Original TCA Constitution and By-Laws
adopted 26 October 1979, Knoxville, TN
Article I: Name
The name of this Association shall be “The Tennessee Classical Association.”
Article II: Objective
The aim of this Association shall be the promotion and appreciation of Greek, Latin, and Classical Civilization studies in the state of Tennessee.
Article III: Membership
Any interested person may become a member of the Association upon payment of the prescribed annual dues.
Article IV: Officers and their Election

Duties of the Officers
The official organ of the Association shall be The Tennessee Classicist, to be published twice annually.
Nominating Committee
The president shall be responsible for appointing a Nominating Committee, whose duty will be to form a slate of officers to be voted upon at the fall meeting.
Executive Committee
The president may from time to time appoint such committees as he or she sees fit to further the work of the Association.
Dues and Fees
The annual dues shall be three dollars ($3.00).
Meetings
Parliamentary authority for the Association shall be Robert’s Rules of Order, revised 1970.
How to Amend
Amendment of these by-laws may be accomplished by a majority vote of those present at the meeting at which action is to be taken.
Article I: Name
The name of this Association shall be “The Tennessee Classical Association.”
Article II: Objective
The aim of this Association shall be the promotion and appreciation of Greek, Latin, and Classical Civilization studies in the state of Tennessee.
Article III: Membership
Any interested person may become a member of the Association upon payment of the prescribed annual dues.
Article IV: Officers and their Election
- The officers shall a president, a vice-president, and a secretary-treasurer.
- The officers shall be advised and assisted in the performance of their duties by an Executive Committee, constituted by the by-laws of the Associate provide.
- The officers shall be elected annually at the fall meeting of the Association.
- In the event of the death or resignation of the president, the vice-president shall succeed to that office and serve out the remainder of the unexpired term. When any of the other offices is vacated for any reason, the president shall have the power to make an interim appointment until an election can be held at the next business meeting of the Association.
- At least one business meeting of the Association shall be held annually.
- Other meetings shall be held at times and places to be determined in accordance with current by-laws.
- Notice of all business meetings of the Association shall be given in writing to all members, postmarked not less than thirty days prior to the date of the meeting.
- Amendments to this Constitution may be proposed:
a. At any business meeting, to be acted upon at the next following business meeting.
b. To the secretary in writing, not less than sixty days before the the date of the next business meeting, to be acted upon at that meeting. In this event, the text of the proposed amendment shall be mailed to all members with the notice of the meeting not less than thirty days before the date of the meeting. - Amendments that have been duly proposed may be adopted by affirmation of vote of two-thirds of the members present and voting at a business meeting of the Association.

Duties of the Officers
- Officers shall take office thirty days following their election and shall serve a term of one year.
- Officers shall perform the duties appropriate to their offices, as outlined in Chapter IV (pp.374-398), Robert’s Rules of Order, revised 1970.
- In addition to the foregoing:
a. The president and the secretary shall be responsible for publicity concerning the Association.
b. The president shall be responsible for the conduct of all meetings of the Association.
c. The vice-president shall oversee the execution of the details of all meetings.
The official organ of the Association shall be The Tennessee Classicist, to be published twice annually.
Nominating Committee
The president shall be responsible for appointing a Nominating Committee, whose duty will be to form a slate of officers to be voted upon at the fall meeting.
Executive Committee
- The Executive Committee shall consist of the officers of the Association, ex officio, the most recent ex-president of the Association, the editor of The Tennessee Classicist, and the Tennessee Vice-President of the Classical Association of the Middle West and South.
- The officers of the Association shall hold, ex officio, the same offices in the Executive Committee.
- The Executive Committee shall meet at the call of the president.
- The editor of The Tennessee Classicist shall be appointed by the president for a term of two years.
- The function of the Executive Committee shall be to assist and advise the officers in the performance of their duties and to prepare the agenda for the business meetings of the Association.
The president may from time to time appoint such committees as he or she sees fit to further the work of the Association.
Dues and Fees
The annual dues shall be three dollars ($3.00).
Meetings
- The Association shall meet at least once a year.
- Additional meetings may be held at the discretion of the Executive Committee, provided that, if business is to transacted, due notice be given to all members in accordance with the provisions of Article V, Section 3 of the Constitution.
- A quorum shall consist of those in attendance at the meeting.
Parliamentary authority for the Association shall be Robert’s Rules of Order, revised 1970.
How to Amend
Amendment of these by-laws may be accomplished by a majority vote of those present at the meeting at which action is to be taken.
